Just a little something focused on Soul and Maka prior to Maka leaving for the grand opening.
Maka wasn't sure of how much time had passed since she'd begun getting ready for her trip. All she knew for certain was that she was almost done packing and about ready to leave. In a way, she was glad she was taking the opportunity to take a break from Death City. While she did love the city, it was nice to get away from it every once in a while. Sure she would miss her friends. She might even miss her papa if she thought about it (though it seemed very unlikely). That wasn't going to stop her from going through with her plan, though. Maka wanted to see for herself what the hotel was like.
"You sure are putting a lot of effort into this for someone who wasn't even sure she wanted to go."
Maka looked up from her suitcase and over her shoulder, catching Soul's eye as he leaned against the frame of her bedroom door and frowning a little as she caught sight of the look on his face. He'd come to try and convince her to stay again. That had to be it. "I thought about it, and it's something I really want to do Soul." Maka explained. That would suffice, she thought. It was simple and should have left Soul satisfied. However, as she closed her suitcase and stood up, Maka saw that Soul wasn't quite satisfied with her response. The look in his crimson red eyes was enough to make that clear.
"So that's it? You're just going to leave Death City behind in favor of some snooty hotel?" Soul asked. Maka's brows furrowed and her frown grew. Why was Soul so against the idea of her leaving? She would freely admit that she didn't want to leave at first, but her plan was to investigate. It probably wouldn't have taken her that long to do what she wanted to. Why did her partner want her to stay so badly? Maka would have understood if it was Crona, as the pink-haired boy didn't want her to really leave either, but Soul? The idea was confounding.
"I'm not leaving permanently, Soul. I'll be back." she said. Maka looked directly into Soul's eyes as she spoke. For a long moment, neither of them moved. It was as though they were trying to resonate with one another without being in battle. Finally, much to Maka's surprise, Soul seemed to give in. He shrugged casually and moved away from the door frame so that his back was to her.
"Fine. Go ahead. But you'd better come back, or else I'll never let you hear the end of it."
Much to Maka's relief, there was a hint of teasing in his tone. He was just messing with her for the most part. She knew Soul would never do anything to hurt her, and for that she was relieved. Maka finally nodded and picked her suitcase up. "It's a promise." she said. As she walked past Soul on her way out of their home, she could have sworn she heard Soul say something else.
"Don't forget to remember me when you're out there."
